Nathan Mintz learned at an early age that good character and tenacity can get you anywhere. The son of a commercial fisherman, Nathan spent a large part of his early life on the back deck of his father’s boat, learning the importance of hard work, self-reliance and personal responsibility. Nathan didn’t always have it easy: all too frequently, his father’s livelihood was threatened by increasing government reach and oversight- often for unfair or unjust reasons. This experience gave him a unique appreciation for the proper role of government in safeguarding freedom, property, and protecting the rights of its citizens to earn an honest living.
Nathan attended Stanford University, where he graduated with a Bachelors and a Masters Degree in Materials Science & Engineering, with an emphasis on nanotechnology. While at Stanford, he was the Stanford Daily Editorial Board and was a frequent contributor to both the Stanford Daily and the Stanford Review, the campus conservative newspaper. He was vice president of the Stanford Israel Alliance and was affiliated with Chabad and the College Republicans.
After graduation, Nathan went to work for a major aerospace contractor in El Segundo, working his way up to a Senior Systems Engineer and small team lead on an advanced sensor development program. In his time in industry, he has demonstrated great skill, innovation and leadership, earning not just the respect of his colleagues but establishing himself as the go to guy for solving many tough problems. He has shown a real knack for innovation, with two patents awarded and two more applications pending on inventions he has conceived. Among his inventions is a device for detecting concealed passengers being smuggled through border crossings, which is now being considered for implementation at the US-Mexico border.
In his spare time, Nathan Mintz has cofounded a think tank, California Common Sense, devoted to advancing pragmatic, non-partisan solutions to our state’s budget and economic problems. He has also been a fierce advocate for reforming our legal system, serving on the Leadership Committee of California Citizen’s Against Lawsuit Abuse.
A long time political activist, he is a member of the Republican Jewish Coalition and the South Bay Lincoln Club, as well as serving as Secretary of the Republican Party of Los Angeles County and an ex-oficio member of the 53rd Assembly District Central Committee. In 2010, As a candidate for State Assembly in the 53rd District, Nathan received 43% of the vote — 62,770 votes in all –and won every city in the District south of the airport: El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance and Lomita by over 8,000 votes. This experience fortified in him his conviction that we need a new generation of leaders in Sacramento who will put ordinary Californians before the special interests, and common sense ahead of partisanship.
Nathan is also active in his community, serving as Vice-Chair of the El Camino College District’s Boundary Review Committee and as a member of Torrance Kiwanis.
A lifelong California resident, Nathan lives in Torrance with his wife, Judy and their dog Nopi.
