When Nathan Mintz attended his first big tea party a year ago, he had no idea he would soon seek to swap his days as an aerospace engineer for a job under the Capitol dome.
“Spending a majority of my time in politics wasn’t something I initially planned, but I felt like I had to do something,” Mintz said. “Once you get so involved, you’re committed. You feel like you want to see things through.”
Now Mintz, the sole Republican running in a Democrat-heavy Assembly district in Los Angeles, has joined a growing pool of tea party activists hoping to convert the energy of what began as a fringe movement into votes at the polls.
Just a year after staging its first Tax Day rallies across the country, the tea party movement has produced its own crop of candidates running under the Republican flag in California, with activists competing in a handful of state legislative and congressional races, as well as the GOP gubernatorial primary.

Nathan Mintz Gains Endorsement of #1 Taxpayer Group in California
South Bay, Los Angeles – Candidate Nathan Mintz announced today he has gained a key Endorsement in his race for State Assembly.
The endorsement comes from the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association PAC. The leading voice of the taxpayer in California, Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association was the strength behind last year’s landslide defeat of Prop. 1A – the massive $16 Billion tax increase on the May 19th Special Election ballot.
“Nathan has demonstrated a clear understanding of the issues facing the State of California,” said Jon Coupal, President of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. “As founder of the South Bay Tea Party, he has witnessed first-hand that the average taxpayer in California is fed up with the establishment in Sacramento. We need an ally like Nathan to fight for taxpayers in the State Capitol.”
Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association has been prominently featured in the news this week and in TV, Radio and online ads after they endorsed Meg Whitman for Governor.
The key Endorsement for Nathan comes just one day after Nathan officially filed papers to run for State Assembly.

Tea Party Candidate Issues Fundraising Challenge: $20.10 for 2010
Grassroots Candidate seeks Small Change to combat Big Special Interests in Sacramento
South Bay, Los Angeles – The South Bay’s Tea Party candidate Nathan Mintz wants you to lift up your sofa cushions, clean out your car, and contribute small change to make a big difference.
Today, State Assembly candidate Nathan Mintz launched an effort targeted toward everyday Californians who are concerned about the current state of affairs in Sacramento, and is drawing upon his profile as the “everyman” candidate and Founder of the successful South Bay Tea Party to do it.
“Every poll from the South Bay to Sacramento shows that the majority of Californians are fed up with what’s happening in Sacramento, but aren’t sure how to help,” said Nathan. “In years past, the citizenry has felt they can’t compete against the deep coffers of the Special Interests, but that has changed. The Tea Party movement of the past year has demonstrated how even small groups of determined citizens can make a huge difference.”
Mintz issued the Fundraising challenge to his supporters in the South Bay – from homeowners to heavy hitters to housewives all across the District.
The next campaign finance reports are due at the end of March.

In Case You Missed It
New Rasmussen Report:
60% of Californians say Incumbents in the State Legislature should not be re-elected
Sacramento – A new survey from Rasmussen shows it’s not a good year to be part of the incumbent establishment.
“As California stumbles through its continuing budget crisis, 60% of likely voters in the state now believe it would be better if most incumbents in the state legislature were defeated in this November’s elections,” Rasmussen’s newest survey shows.
“The Rasmussen survey shows what we have been seeing on the ground for the past year,” said Nathan Mintz, a Tea Party candidate for State Assembly in the South Bay of Los Angeles. “Californians are sick and tired of out-of-touch leaders whose first reaction is to reach for the Taxpayers’ wallet like a band of pickpockets and thieves in the night. November’s ballot will be nothing short of a ‘Wanted Poster’ featuring the names of the State’s top offenders.”
The Rasmussen survey also shows California voters’ attitudes on Taxes.
“Seventy-five percent (75%) of California voters say the bigger problem for the state is not taxpayers’ unwillingness to pay enough in taxes but is instead the unwillingness of politicians to control government spending.”
The telephone survey was conducted among “likely voters” in California on February 15, 2010.

Key Endorsements in Race for State Assembly
Tea Party Leader Nathan Mintz Earns
Key Endorsements in Race for State Assembly
Endorsements cite “fiscal discipline” as a sure winner for 2010
South Bay, Los Angeles – Assembly candidate Nathan Mintz announced he has received the Endorsement of fiscal leader Tom Campbell.
“Nathan will make a great Assemblyman and I’m proud to give him my endorsement,” said Campbell. “We need more people with his in-depth understanding of the issues in Sacramento.”
Campbell, a former United States Congressman who has served as Director of Finance for the State of California under Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, holds a Ph.D. in Economics and was mentored by respected economist Milton Friedman. He previously served in the Federal Trade Commission during the Ronald Reagan administration.
“Tom Campbell is one of those rare leaders who has actually rolled up his sleeves to do the work of the People,” said Nathan Mintz. “When California was having trouble keeping its lights on after the energy crisis, Tom was there burning the midnight oil to find solutions. And when California’s economy was within days of collapsing, Tom was there to help resuscitate it. I respect his commitment to public service, and in that spirit of selfless service, I am honored to have his endorsement.”
TEA PAC also Endorses Nathan Mintz
Nathan also reported gaining the Endorsement of TEA PAC – a political action committee dedicated to providing funds and resources to Tea Party groups and grassroots candidates across America. TEA PAC provided support and resources to Scott Brown’s successful campaign in Massachusetts.
Nathan, founder of the successful South Bay Tea Party, announced last week he will run for State Assembly. He is the first Tea Party leader to announce his candidacy in the state of California.

South Bay Tea Party Leader Nathan Mintz Announces Run for State Assembly
New breed of Candidate emerges for 2010 in the wake of the Tea Parties
South Bay, Los Angeles – A fresh, new breed of candidate is set to storm the State of California.
Nathan Mintz, an active Tea Party leader and founder of the successful South Bay Tea Party, announced today he will run for State Assembly in 2010. Nathan is the first Tea Party founder to announce his candidacy in the state of California.
With a recent Field Poll showing two-thirds of Californians are aware of the Tea Party protests – and that Californians now actually identify themselves with the Tea Party movement – the establishment in Sacramento may very well see a shakeup in the 2010 Election Year.
“California is in deep trouble,” said Mintz. “The problem is that the embedded interests in Sacramento – not the People – are calling the shots. With the power of the People behind me, I will run an aggressive campaign so that the voice of real, everyday Californians will be heard in the Capitol.”
Nathan will run for the open seat in the 53rd Assembly District – a seat being vacated by Ted Lieu who is terming out this year. He will focus on California’s Budget Crisis, runaway Pension system, and overly-burdensome regulations that are killing California’s economy.
A professional who holds a ‘real’ job in the Aerospace industry, Nathan says the solution for Sacramento “isn’t rocket science.” He says that while California’s economy has been bleeding to death, the Legislature has been spending their time passing Climate Change bill AB 32, which will cost more than 1.1 Million jobs, $182 Billion in lost output, and further burden Californians already struggling to make it. And, the morning after Scott Brown’s victory in Massachusetts, the Legislature began to push Universal healthcare again in California. “These people could not be any more out of touch – it’s as if they’re living on the Moon.”
“Not too long ago, California was the envy of the nation; today we are faced with one perennial budget crisis after another, failing schools, and a ‘tax me/sue me/regulate me’ culture that is making Californians flee the state. It is our elected leaders that have put us here,” said Mintz. “For the past couple of decades, we have had the same broken ideas cycling through the Legislature, fed to our elected leaders by the same interests that have financed the political caste system at We the People’s expense. This is the result of a toxic culture which feels that more government is the solution to every problem. The time is ripe for fresh new faces in Sacramento to shake things up.”
While always a patriot, Nathan was shocked into action in early 2009. He was appalled by the perfect storm of massive corporate bailouts, out-of-control spending by the Federal government, and California’s State government spiraling out of control. Like tens of millions of others, he was infuriated by what he saw as the irresponsible behavior of a few, being paid for by everyone else –and by a government that had grown too far, too fast. He established the South Bay Tea Party, which grew like wildfire and today totals more than 1,500 members and is part of the L.A. Metro area’s effort which is 40,000 members strong.
The son of a commercial fisherman, Nathan spent much of his childhood on the back of his father’s boat, learning that hard work and tenacity can get you anywhere. After getting into Stanford University, Nathan served on the Editorial Board of the Stanford Daily, and was also a contributor to the Stanford Review. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree and a Masters degree in Materials Science and Engineering, with an emphasis on Nanotechnology. After graduation, Nathan went to work for a major Aerospace contractor in the South Bay, where he has earned a reputation for solving tough problems. Showing a knack for innovation, he now has four patents pending on inventions he has conceived. Among his inventions is a device for detecting concealed passengers being smuggled through border crossings, which is being now being considered for implementation at the US-Mexico border. A lifelong California resident, Nathan lives in Redondo Beach with his wife Judy and their dog Nopi.

California Legislature Misses the Message of Massachusetts Election as they Resuscitate Universal Healthcare Proposal
Assemblyman Ted Lieu, Co-Sponsor of bill, proves he is “tone deaf” to Voters
South Bay — Proving that the message of this week’s Massachusetts election has been lost on them, the California Legislature today announced they will resuscitate the unpopular “single payer” Universal Healthcare bill – co-authored by none other than Assemblyman Ted Lieu of the South Bay.
“The California Legislature has clearly never learned the lesson that when you have dug yourself into a hole and you want to get out, the first thing you need to do is stop digging,” said Nathan Mintz, candidate for State Assembly in the 53rd District. “While Universal healthcare in Washington has been placed on Life Support this week, it is shocking that California has revived an effort to heap more government spending on the taxpayer.”
Already facing a $20 Billion budget deficit this year (and it’s only January!), Ted Lieu and his fellow Legislators have proven this week they are tone deaf to the will of the people, as they continue to push a government-mandated health program that has a price tag of $42 Million in just the first year.
Even the Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO) reports that SB 810, the “California Universal Healthcare Act” would not only produce budget shortfalls, but that if implemented, the program would require a tax of 16% to mitigate predicted shortfalls in revenue.
With nearly 13% unemployment, California Legislators are wasting time on a universal healthcare system that will further increase payroll taxes on the middle class. All of which proves that fresh, new leadership is needed in Sacramento – leadership which is focused on digging the state out of the hole it is in – not elected officials who are hell-bent on passing more government programs which will further devastate the State.
